List of My Favorite Developer Tools

Great Indian Developer Awards honor technologies contributing to the productivity and innovation excellence of the Indian developer ecosystem.

Every Year , the developers are invited for voting to select their favorite developer tools based on some categories are are awarded during the Developer Summit and this year too the voting has began .

Here’s my list of favorites Developer tools that i will be voting for .

1. Development Environment

Nominations : Eclipse , Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 , CodeRush , Adobe Flash Builder 4 , NetBeans , IBM Rational Application Developer , Oracle JDeveloper , JBoss Developer Studio

My Picks : I will go for Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 simply because its my personal favorite too . If Visual Studio was not in the list probaby i would have gone for Adobe Flash Builder 4 .

2. Collaboration Solution category

Nominations : Microsoft Office 365 , Telerik TeamPulse , Atlassian Confluence , Adobe Acrobat Connect Professional , Jive Engage Platform , phpBB , IBM Lotus Connections , 37Signals Basecamp

My Picks : This category is pretty confusing for me to vote , since i dont have any clue about the products except phpBB .
So with lack of knowledge on other things , i ultimately ended up with phpBB.

3. Content Management category

Nominations : IBM WebSphere Portal , Drupal , Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server (MOSS) , Oracle Universal Content Management , Telerik Sitefinity , EMC Documentum , Microsoft Content Management Server , Alfresco CMS .

My Picks : Hmm , something is missing Joomla 🙁 . But i am fine with Drupal too . I have heard of Sitefinity and Alfresco too ..

4. Design and Modeling category

Nominations : NoMagic MagicDraw 17 , IBM Rational Rose , Microsoft Visio 2010 , Genuitec MyEclipse , Ravenflow RAVEN , Sybase PowerDesigner , Borland Together , Oracle JDeveloper

My Picks : Another Guess work – Going for Microsoft Visio 2010

5. Change and Configuration Management

Nominations : CollabNet TeamForge , AccuRev AgileCycle Suite , Telerik TeamPulse , Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager , Rational Software Architect , Perforce SCM , Serena Dimensions CM , Embarcadero DB Change Manager XE

My Picks : CollabNet TeamForge

6. Testing

Nominations : Klocwork Insight , JUnit Testing Framework , JBoss Profiler , TestComplete , Telerik Web UI Test Studio ,IBM Rational Functional Tester,Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate , iTKO LISA Product Suite

My Picks – Don’t know what Visual Studio is doing here , but i would have prefereed NUnit , so instead going for JUnit .

7. Security

Nominations : Microsoft Security Essentials , Kaspersky Open Space Security , McAfee Total Protection for Endpoint , Microsoft Forefront , Quest Software’s InTrust , Atlassian Crowd , Adobe LiveCycle Rights Management ES , Parasoft Application Security Solution

My Picks – Undoubtedly , its MCafee .

8. Web Development

Nominations : Dojo Toolkit , Microsoft ASP.NET , Adobe Flash Platform ,Microsoft Silverlight , Adobe ColdFusion ,DXperience ASP.NET ,Telerik RadControls for Silverlight ,Embarcadero Embarcadero 3rdRail .

My Picks – Adobe Flash Platform clearly beats other competitors . Telerik’s RadControl / DevExpress’s ASP.NET would be an second option .

9. Mobile Development

Nominations : Windows Phone 7 , Nokia Symbian , Qualcomm BREW , Google Android , PhoneGap , JavaScript on Mobile , HP webOS , Samsung Bada

My Picks – My Heart says Windows Phone 7 , but my mind says Google Android 🙂 .
Hopefully next year the category is only filled with Nokia WP7 , HTC WP7 etc…

10. Frameworks

Nominations : Apache Struts,Spring Framework,eXpress Application Framework (XAF),jQuery,Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5,Telerik WebAii ,Testing Framework,JBoss Seams,eXpress Persistent Objects (XPO)

My Picks : Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 . It should have been .NET 4.0 but since the absense of it makes me go for .NET 3.5

11. Database & Reporting

Nominations : Oracle Database 11g,Microsoft SQL Server 2008,DevExpress Analytics,MySQL,IBM DB2 9.7,PostgreSQL,Telerik OpenAccess ORM,Quest Software’s TOAD

My Picks : Oracle

    very poorly written article.
    obviously MS biased, which is okay, but not fun to read.
    also, illiterate at times, for example: “My Heart says..” – why capitalize the word heart?? o.O

    anyway, keep writing, good stuff will come along 🙂

    Good that you noticed “H” . what to do , got in to habit of writing text in pascal casing . i know , will rectify it 🙂

    Have you every heard about the open source? You have mentioned every bit of a software which is only closed source. Can Visual Studio run on my apple machine or my ubuntu desktop on which I do not need to go towards any security softwares. By the way you have not mentioned any anti-adware software for your browsers on Windows platforms.
    For the last five years I am working on ubuntu box and used Netbeans, myEclipse, JDeveloper, many design tools, and databases like postgres,mysql,oracle, DB2 etc.
