Mobile Phone Landscape- India 2014 by, India’s largest gadget research website for mobile phones and personal technology, has released its 2nd annual report on the Mobile Phone Landscape in India in 2014. There is little doubt that 2014 was a transformative year for the Indian smartphone industry. While the market grew substantially in terms of customer uptake and vibrancy of brands & devices, the coming of new brands, innovative online-only business models, and the rise of the ‘giant-killer’ budget and mid-range devices, turned things topsy-turvy.

The report is based on 91mobiles’ database and user behavior on the site. 91mobiles extensive catalog contains over 20,000 devices launched since the website’s inception in 2010; includes practically every mobile phone launched in India over the last 3 to 4 years.

Here are some of the trends covered in the report:

  • Over 1,000 phones launched in India in 2014, from close to 100 brands
  • New and resurgent brands like Xiaomi, Motorola, Asus, Lenovo, etc. saw substantial interest in their budget & VFM devices – their devices constituted over 30 percent of all searches by December 2014.
  • A number of these brands exploited the exclusive online sale model; by December 2014, devices selling exclusively onlin accounted for as much as 20% of all searches and how  the market share four of the top five most popular brands lost popularity share in 2014 vs 2013, although their positions remained intact.
  • The budget segment (Rs 5,000-15,000) grew in popularity at the cost of all other price segments in 2014 as compared to 2013.
  • The average selling price of smartphones reduced by almost 18% over the course of the year, fueled by game-changers in the budget segment.
  • Phones with high-end specs like a full HD display, OR an octa core processor, OR 2 GB RAM, OR a 13 MP camera – are all now available under Rs. 10,000
